Allahverdiyeva-Rinne and her colleagues received the award for the article Towards sustainable ethylene production with cyanobacterial artificial biofilms, published in the journal Green Chemistry.
– The awarded research has significant merits, and in the future, it can enable production of different types of plastics in a much more environmentally sustainable method, Carl G. Gahmberg, Ådo Akademi Chancellor, said when he presented the award.
In the article, the authors aim to develop a thin-layer artificial biofilm technology for sustainable and long-term ethylene photoproduction by engineered photosynthetic microbes. This lays the foundation for the development of sustainable fossil-free production platforms for fuels and chemicals, which will contribute to the transition from a linear fossil-based economy to a circular sustainable (bio)economy.
Nordic added value
– We at NordForsk are very pleased with this award, says director Arne Flåøyen.
– Our ambition is to contribute to making the Nordic region globally leading in research and innovation. This award demonstrates that the research carried out by Yagut Allahverdiyeva-Rinne and the other researchers at NordAqua maintains a high scientific quality and contributes to creating Nordic added value.

NordAqua and the bioeconomy programme
NordAqua is one of three Nordic Centers of Excellence established through NordForsk's bioeconomy programme. NordAqua brings internationally recognized Nordic senior scientists and younger PIs together with experts in industrial biorefinery fields in order to generate a multidisciplinary platform for rapid transition to sustainable blue bioeconomy.
The overall aim of the programme is to produce new knowledge on how to foster and advance the transition to a bioeconomy-based society in the Nordic countries by integrating research, innovation and entrepreneurship in the private and public sectors.
The programme will fund activities that are cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary, and that involve the private and public sector and other stakeholders.
